Health Insurance Benefit Update: $42 Monthly Benefit Savings!

As you know, we have recently completed a successful financing of our pension obligation. Our first priority is to spend some of this money to help address the costs of health insurance for all employees. We are pleased to tell you that for the upcoming 2008/09 plan year we will contribute $42 per month, or $504 per year per employee to reduce the cost to you of all district medical options, regardless of the medical plan or coverage option in which you are enrolled.

General Information

Medical, Dental and Vision:

Use Open Enrollment to make changes in your medical, dental and vision coverage, such as:

Healthcare/Dependent Care Reimbursement Accounts:

If you wish to continue or enroll in the Healthcare and/or Dependent Care Reimbursement for July 1, 2008 through June 30, 2009,you must do so at Open Enrollment. These accounts allow you to pay for eligible expenses with pre-tax dollars. You can find more information and guidelines regarding these accounts under Benefit Plan Descriptions.

You can set aside up to $250 per month or $3,000 annually in the Healthcare Reimbursement Account and/or up to $416.66 per month or $5,000 in the Dependent Care Reimbursement Account. Be sure to budget for these accounts carefully, because any funds remaining in your account but not expensed out at the end of the plan year will be forfeited.

NOTE – NEW CARRIER EFFECTIVE JULY 1, 2008. Planned Benefit Systems (PBS) will be the carrier of choice for the reimbursement accounts. PBS offers easy to use Debit Card and online claim submission processes. For more information visit their web site below.

Additional Benefits:

If you wish to enroll, change or drop additional optional insurance you must do so during Open Enrollment. See Optional Life Insurance and Additional Benefits for further information.

Mid-year Changes:

Open Enrollment is the only time you can switch from one carrier to another (i.e., Kaiser to PacifiCare) or change plans within a carrier (i.e., PacifiCare Plus to PacifiCare HMO).You can only make changes to your benefits during the plan year if you have a status change (i.e., marriage, divorce, birth/adoption, death of a dependent, and loss of employment). The change must coincide with the type of status change (i.e. add/delete a dependent for marriage, divorce, birth or adoption, or pick up coverage because of a spouse job loss, etc.) If you have a status change you are required to provide the Benefits Department written proof of the change within 30 days of the qualifying event to be able to change your coverage.

DPS Contribution for the Flex Plan:

Your current Flex $$ amount is based on the amount your employee group negotiated. Except for status changes as listed above, no additional benefit changes will be allowed after the open enrollment period even though the district contribution may change.

Paycheck Deductions:

Any changes in deduction amounts due to open enrollment changes will be reflected in your July paycheck.

Your Prescription Drug Coverage and Medicare:

The following is important information for you or your family members who are covered by Medicare or will be covered by Medicare in the next 12 months. The purpose of this notification is to advise you that the prescription drug coverage you have under Denver Public Schools medical plans are expected to pay out, on average, at least as much as the standard Medicare prescription drug coverage will pay in 2008.
