Teacher Preparation Programs
Metro State College of Denver
The MSCD Teacher Education Programs prepare students to apply to the Colorado Department of Education for licensure. Students entering the program are typically either "degree seeking" undergraduates or "licensure only" graduates who have previously earned baccalaureate degrees. In the Teacher Education Programs, we support the MSCD mission to provide quality undergraduate education to the residents of metropolitan Denver. We provide one of the largest and best teacher education programs in the state to a diverse group of future teachers. As a student, you will have the opportunity to learn from highly qualified educators in professional education and content area studies, as well as from experienced public school teacher practitioners.

Education is undergoing dramatic changes. Teachers who entered the profession in large numbers in the 1960s are now reaching retirement age. At the same time, the school-age population is increasing every year. Teachers, principals and other school leaders are needed today, not only to replace those who are retiring, but also to fill new positions.
The Teacher Education program offers many options for both aspiring and experienced educators who are seeking a Bachelor's degree and licensure, or who already have a degree and wish to become licensed. In addition, options are available for teachers who wish to upgrade their skills and credentials.

If you are interested in initial professional teacher education program (IPTE), you should meet with a College of Liberal Arts and Sciences CLAS Education Advisor as soon as possible. You can complete your degree, including licensure within a 4-year graduation plan, but only if you declare it early in your college career and meet regularly with your advisors.
Students interested in Teacher Education will major in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. The State of Colorado does not allow for an undergraduate major in Education. You will complete a major in CLAS and then complete your Initial Professional Teacher Education (IPTE) requirements. You will be working with your CLAS advisor through the application process. For information about the IPTE program, you can look at the Handbook [pdf].

The Teacher Education Program (TEP) is an intensive, 40 quarter-credit-hour, nine-month academic experience designed for individuals who already hold a bachelor's degree and seek a Colorado teaching license. Adding to its appeal, all students admitted into the program are offered a half tuition scholarship.
Students can add an additional four courses to earn a master's in Curriculum and Instruction through our Combined Licensure and Master's Program (CLAMP). These additional courses are offered in the evening so that students complete their master's degree during their first year of teaching.

The Center has both an elementary and special education teacher preparation program that leads students to a Bachelor's degree and Colorado teacher licensure. But it is more than that - it is a place where traditional scholarship meets a rich real-world experience in a metropolitan area school classroom - a place where students find a home for learning and growing as teaching professionals.
