Substitute Teachers

The District relies on qualified and enthusiastic substitute teachers to maintain an instructional atmosphere in each classroom while their teacher is out. Providing a learning environment each day is a critical component in the success of our children's education.

Substitutes are compensated at a daily rate of $87.30 (half-day $43.65), long term assignments $153.21(starting on the 17th day). Retired teachers from any school district are compensated at $102.70 per day. Denver Public Schools offers training for substitutes on classroom management prior to entering the classroom.

Many people utilize substitute teaching as a pathway into the teaching profession. Substitute teaching is an avenue for many to decide if they would like to pursue additional educational to secure their teaching credentials.

To become a substitute teacher, you must possess a Colorado Department of Education teaching license, 5 year substitute authorization, or 3 year substitute authorization. In order to obtain a substitute authorization you must have at least a Bachelors Degree. Please visit www.cde.state.co.us for more details.
