Becoming a Teacher
Making the decision to become a teacher and make a difference in a child’s life is no easy choice to make. This decision may take place at various stages of one’s life, and understanding the pathways to secure a position and obtain a teacher’s license is critical. As Denver Public Schools works to identify, recruit and place highly qualified candidates with our student population, we offer numerous options to help you become a teacher. Please review the links below for a more detailed description of these options to determine which program best fits your needs.
- Alternative Licensure Program
For individuals who do not hold a teacher's license but do have previous K-12 teaching experience. - Teachers in Residence
For individuals who do not hold a teacher's license and have no previous teaching experience. (For ECE, Secondary Math, Montessori, Secondary Science, Special Education or World Languages: Spanish or in Bilingual ECE, Elementary, Math and/or Science classrooms) - Teacher in Residence/CASEL (Colorado Accelerated Special Education Licensure)
For individuals who do not hold a teacher's license and have no previous teaching experience. (For Special Education endorsement only) - Denver Teaching Fellows
For individuals who do not hold a teacher's license and have no previous teaching experience. (For Math, Science, Special Education endorsements or in Elementary Bilingual classes only) - Teach for America
For individuals who do not hold a teacher's license, are recent college graduates and have the desire to help the children in their community. - Substitute Teachers
For individuals with at least a three-year Substitute Authorization who are interested in obtaining teaching experience. - Teacher Preparation Programs at Area Colleges and Universities
For individuals who do not hold a teacher's license who want to participate in a traditional teacher preparation program.
