Becoming a Teacher

Making the decision to become a teacher and make a difference in a child’s life is no easy choice to make. This decision may take place at various stages of one’s life, and understanding the pathways to secure a position and obtain a teacher’s license is critical. As Denver Public Schools works to identify, recruit and place highly qualified candidates with our student population, we offer numerous options to help you become a teacher. Please review the links below for a more detailed description of these options to determine which program best fits your needs.

  • One Year Alternative Licensure Program
    For individuals who do not hold a teacher's license but do have previous K-12 teaching experience. Available for candidates in our highest needs areas only: Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education (in a bilingual or Montessori classroom only) or in Secondary Education (grades 6-12): Mathematics, Science, or World Language: Spanish.
  • Two Year Alternative Licensure Program
    For individuals who do not hold a teacher's license and have no previous teaching experience.(The ALP-2 program is available for candidates in our highest needs areas only: Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education (in a bilingual or Montessori classroom only) or in Secondary Education (grades 6-12): Mathematics, Science, or World Language: Spanish.
  • Two Year Alternative Licensure Program-CASEL
    For individuals who do not hold a teacher's license and have no previous teaching experience. (For Special Education endorsement only)
  • Denver Teacher Residency Program
    The Denver Teacher Residency offers teacher candidates an alternative route to a career in education, providing them the training and instruction necessary to help them become exceptional teachers
  • Denver Teaching Fellows
    The Denver Teaching Fellows recruits and trains outstanding career changers and recent college graduates to teach the students who need them most.
  • Teach for America
    For individuals who do not hold a teacher's license, are recent college graduates and have the desire to help the children in their community.
  • Substitute Teachers
    For individuals with at least a three-year Substitute Authorization who are interested in obtaining teaching experience.
  • Teacher Preparation Programs at Area Colleges and Universities
    For individuals who do not hold a teacher's license who want to participate in a traditional teacher preparation program.
